Pau, with its famous castle, home to Henry IV, is a blend of ancient and modern. Discover the Boulevarde des Pyrenees, where you can stop and take coffee or a pastis while appreciating one of the most beautiful views of the Pyrenees. You will find an interesting variety of shops in the town, from chic dress and accessory shops to teashops and restaurants. Pau also has its own golf club, the oldest in Europe ouside the UK.

Spain, with its long lazy days, San Sebastian, Bilbao, Funtarrabia, Spanish and Basque cultures mix together in colourful complexity, are less than two hours drive. On the Atlantic coast, Bayonne and Biarritz, with sailing, fishing and surfing in Hossegor.

Lourdes is not far, and the thermal stations of Dax and Salies de Béarn offer a comprehensive range of beauty and relaxation therapies.

Closer to home,if you like adventure, you can try your hand in the nearby adventure park, climbing in the trees. If winter sports are more your style, the ski resorts of Gourette and Pierre Saint Martin are less than an hour away. (Snow tyres, 4 x 4 or chains are advised)

Lastly, don't miss the wine regions of Jurançon, Madiran and Béarn. Take some wine and foie gras home with you as a souvenir of a region rich in everything that makes life good.
